Dental Implants Longevity: Dental Implant Success & Failure Rate

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 7% of people aged 20 and older worldwide have lost all their teeth. This number jumps to 23% for those aged 60 and older. Losing teeth can be very distressing, affecting confidence, social interactions, and the ability to eat properly.

Dental implants offer a reliable way to overcome these challenges, restoring a full smile and normal function. This article reveals the longevity of dental implants and provides essential tips on extending their lifespan so you can continue smiling confidently for years to come.

What Are Dental Implants and Why Are They Popular?

Dental implants are one of the most effective solutions for replacing missing or damaged teeth. They act as artificial tooth roots, securely holding replacement teeth that look and function naturally.

Here’s why they are a preferred choice:

Who Is the Ideal Candidate for Dental Implants?

Successful dental implant treatment begins with identifying suitable candidates. Ideal candidates typically exhibit the following characteristics:

Success Rate of Dental Implants

A meta-analysis looked at how long dental implants last over 20 years. It reviewed different studies about screw-shaped titanium implants to see how well they hold up over time. The analysis found that about 4 out of 5 dental implants still work after 20 years. Initial studies showed a 92% survival rate, but this dropped to 78% when accounting for missing data. Other studies reported an 88% survival rate, indicating that implant failures can happen for many reasons.

Another study looked at how well dental implants hold up shortly after being placed. Involving 128 patients who received a single implant, the study found that 91.4% of the implants were still successful early on. Some risk factors that affected the success included the patient's age, the immediate placement of the implant, and the length of the implant; shorter implants had a slightly lower success rate.

What Factors Affect the Success Rate of Dental Implants?

Several factors can influence how well dental implants work and how long they last. Here are some important considerations:

Dental Implant Failure Rate

A study looked at the dental implant failure rate over six years. Out of 376 implants placed, 12 failed, giving a failure rate of 3.11%. Most of these failures happened in the upper jaw, especially in the back, and were connected to issues like low bone density, sinus lift surgery, and peri-implantitis (a type of gum disease around the implant).

Another study followed 10,871 dental implants in 4,247 patients for up to 22 years. The overall implant failure rate was 1.6%, with 178 implant failures among 140 patients. Key risk factors for failure included smoking, diabetes, immediate implantation, and bone grafting procedures.

What Are the Common Causes of Dental Implant Failure?

While dental implant failure is not common, knowing what could go wrong might help catch issues early or even prevent them.

Here are some common causes:
